Pyramids
There are additional pyramids that illustrate the transfer of energy up the food chain. One such pyramid is the biomass pyramid. These pyramids represent the number of organisms multiplied by the dry weight of the organic matter within one organism. What you see is that you have a greater biomass for producers than you do for higher level consumers even though the consumers have a much higher body size. A bear is certainly larger than a blade of grass. However, due to the loss of energy at each trophic level there is only enough energy to support fewer numbers of larger organisms. Notice that this roughly follows that 10% trend you saw in the energy pyramid. You would expect to see the same if we did a numbers pyramid. You would have fewer numbers of organisms the higher you go up the pyramid.
